Today we received this email from Matushka Rose Legoute, widow of Fr Gregoire Legoute, one of the senior priests of the Mission.
“Thank God, we did not suffer the catastrophe that was predicted to occur in the wake of Hurricane Irma here in Haiti, but there were considerable damages in the Northern and Central provinces. Bridges have been severed; flooded rivers have devastated vegetable plantations and carried off livestock. Port-au-Prince and other regions of Haiti saw strong winds and rain.
Please help our brothers and sisters in Haiti!
The state mandate for schools reopening, scheduled for September 4th, remains in effect, however, in Haiti, only 5 – 6%of children were able to return to school; most of the other students still wait for their parents to find the means to pay school fees for uniforms and supplies, while still others will either be returning in January, God willing, or forced to miss the school year entirely.
Our current situation is further complicated by violent demonstrations by people calling for better living conditions.
You are in our daily prayers,
Matushka Rose”
