According to Fr. Alexei Aedo, the funds were divided among the suffering in the community and were used to cover medical expenses, Fr. Alexei’s visits to the faithful and food.
“Our hearts are full of gratitude for the assistance you sent us. Our gratitude to our benefactors, may God reward such kindness and Christian love,” wrote Fr. Alexei after receiving the money.
Concepcion still lies in ruins, and people are left without work and income.
“Father's family urgently needs to leave Concepción for a few days, as his family is experiencing symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress,” wrote Elizabeth Jurlow, a member of the St. Nektarios parish council in Santiago in an email. More and more people are exhibiting signs of post traumatic syndrome.
As there is only one ROCOR priest in Chile, the Russian Orthodox Community has to do with reader services while he is serving in another city. At the moment, Fr. Alexei is trying to collect money to fix his car, which will allow him to serve in Santiago from Palm Sunday till Holy Thursday.
“He will return to celebrate Pascha in Concepción, writes Mrs. Jurlow. “We would be happy to have him here at Pascha, but his people there need more support and comfort than we, and we have a Deacon, two readers, and tehere is a priest from the Patriarchate that can support us at least for Zaútryennia. This won’t be the Great Russian Paskha as it should be, but we have only one Batiushka and he has to be shared... But it would be worse not having anything.”
To date, there has been no Russian Orthodox church built in Chile, the faithful in Concepcion serve at an Antiochian church, while the community in Santiago have a portable iconostasis set up in an unoccupied house of one of the parishioners.
The earthquake came when the community in Concepcion were in the process of legalizing a piece of land, donated to our mission for the first Orthodox Church in this city. The Antiochian church was damaged in the earthquake, and the Orthodox are planning to serve in a local school.
